Thursday 24 May, 2018 | Term 2, Week 4

Dear Parents and Friends,

What a joy it was to be in the audience of the first debate of the year against St Bernadette’s Castle Hill last Friday.  Our Year 6 students were beautifully prepared and delivered their arguments with confidence, maturity and skill. The topic was “We should close all our Zoos”. We won both the affirmative and the negative side! So we are off to an excellent start! The Debating Team  will have five opportunities to debate with schools local to us and our next debate will be in Week 7.

Tomorrow we host our special guest Samuel Johnson to pay tribute to the work he has done in raising money to fund cancer research programs. You are all invited! We will be in the hall at 10.30am to hear from him and to the draw the magnificent raffle that the Oaklands family has organised. At this stage the St Madeleine’s community has contributed over $5000 to this campaign and Samuel will be acknowledging your generosity. Morning Tea will be served after the assembly to you are welcome to stay and meet our guest!

We are so fortunate that we have Mrs Maree Concato ~ our new Creative Arts teacher ~ who will be conducting Choir for students Years 2 - 6 on Wednesday mornings at 8.15am. Maree is also a Dance specialist and so we will be having Dance Workshops for students in Years 5 and 6 at lunchtime on Thursdays. We look forward to showcasing the skills of these  groups at assemblies and events.

This year the Catholic Education Office has asked that we conduct the survey Tell Them From Me (TTFM) with all staff, all parents and students in Years 4, 5 and 6. The results of the survey will provide valuable insights for school planning. Student data will be an indicator of learning, student engagement, wellbeing and classroom climate. The information from staff and parents will provide rich data needed to achieve positive and practical improvements here at St Madeleine’s across a range of domains ~ teaching, learning, school climate, parent engagement. The survey takes about 20 minutes to complete and I encourage you all to participate.

The link is www.tellthemfromme.com/stmads18

This information helps us to know what it is we need to do to continually improve the experience for your family at St Madeleine’s. The survey period close at 5pm on Monday 4th June and so date 25 families have completed the survey. Thank you!

I remind all parents that we need to be very careful with our pick up arrangements in the afternoon to ensure all students are well supervised as they move to car pick up or bus lines with their teachers. Parents can wait for their children in two locations ~ at the amphitheatre and in the garden under the shade sails near the hall. We call this garden the Friendship Garden. We do not expect any student to walk to meet their parent in any other location. The only exception to this is the few children who walk to Marian College to be supervised by their parents at the College. Please help us to maintain a safe environment for all the children as they go home each afternoon.

I am wondering if there would be anyone in our community who would like to consider doing relief groundsman work at St Madeleine’s? There are times when Mr MacDougall is on leave and we are unable to replace him which places pressure on the Marian College groundsmen who, thankfully,  are always willing to help us out with bins and cleaning up. Do you know anyone who may be interested? If so please ask them to be in touch with me.

Wishing you all a wonderful week!

Mrs Jeanette Black

Homework Free Week

Next week is a NO HOMEWORK WEEK at St Madeleine’s. This is the week we encourage you to spend some time with your family reading, talking and listening to one another. It is an opportunity for parents to genuinely connect with their child/ children, whether it be over dinner or playing a board game, without the stress of finishing homework.

Mt 28:16-20

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

Baptise them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

The eleven disciples set out for Galilee to the mountain where Jesus had arranged to meet them. When they saw him they fell down before him, though some hesitated. Jesus came up and spoke to them. He said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, make disciples of all the nations; baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you. And know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.’

Good and gracious God, you wonderfully graced St Madeleine Sophie with humility and steadfast love drawn by the Heart of Jesus, your Son.

We pray that, following in her footsteps, we may live in close union with the Heart of Christ and find in Him our joy both now and for eternity.

We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.

Privacy Information and Photo Permission

From time to time we publish children’s results in the University Competitions, i.e. Maths, English, Science and Computer Competitions.  We also publish places in sporting events, other awards and achievements.  If you have any concerns about your child’s name appearing in our School Newsletter or on our school website, please contact the office.

From time to time it is necessary for Class Contact parents or P & F representatives to telephone parents.  If you do not wish your telephone number to be used by these people please contact the school office.

From time to time the school sends photos of our children to newspapers or to the Catholic Education Office for inclusion with an article about St Madeleine's. We also include photos in our School Newsletter and on our school website. If you do not wish photos of your child to be used in any publications at school, Catholic Education Office or newspapers please contact the school office.

If your personal details (address, telephone, etc.) change please inform the school office.  It is important that we have up to date information for the safety of our children.

Car Park Reminder

Fine weather morning drop off:

  • · All students are to be dropped off at the canteen drop off zone.
  • · Under no circumstances are St Madeleine’s children to be dropped off anywhere other than at the official drop off zones where the volunteers are placed to assist the children and they are then in  supervised areas. This is to ensure the safety of our children.
  • · Please drive up around the loop before coming down into the Kiss and Drop area. It means that the queue to drop off does not extend down into the main driveway.

Wet weather morning drop off: Children are to be dropped off at the canteen drop off zone in wet weather when the volunteers are in that location and the children can walk under cover to the supervision areas.

Afternoon pick up: The following are a few rules that all parents and children need to observe at the afternoon pickup to ensure the safety of our children and smooth operation.

  • The driver is not to get out of the car.
  • The car is to stay close to the timber sleepers and bollards at the edge of the bitumen so that cars can pass if necessary.
  • Make sure that your family name can be seen – perhaps use tape to hold it onto the windscreen.
  • Children are to get into the car on the passenger side – they are not to go around the front or the back of the car to get in on the driver’s side. If this is a problem to any family then that parent will need to park and pick the child up.
  • Bags are to go in the cabin of the car with the child – not in the boot.
  • If you are entering through the main gate please do not queue across the driveway for the parish house.
  • If you are entering through the second gate in the afternoon please do not queue across the driveway for the house. The occupants of the house must have access at all times.
  • Wet weather pick up ~ children wait in the Year 2 classrooms and parents drive around next to the church entry to pick up their children.

There is no right turn from the second gate. If you want to turn right then you need to go out the main gate. There is no right turn into the second gate from Annangrove Road. If you are coming from the west you must make your right turn into the main gate.

Parents please use common sense and courtesy when using our driveway and parking areas. Please don’t block driveways or roads to allow the traffic to flow. Please adhere to these rules. They are in place to provide safety for your children.

School Fees statements will be posted to your mailing address this week. If you have not received a statement, please contact the school office 9654 6751 to request a copy of your fee statement.

Please note that unless you have arrangement with the school or CEDP in writing then outstanding school fees are to be paid in full by Wed 6th June 2018. If you are unable to pay by this date, please contact the office to discuss your situation in confidence.

As stated in our Compliance section, the Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta has developed a Policy relating to the notice required from parents to terminate their child's enrolment in the schools of the Parramatta Diocese. In part this states that “ a term’s notice (10 weeks) in writing must be given to the Principal before the removal of a student or a full term’s fees will be paid. The notice can be given any time during the term for next term.

This means that unless the school receives a term’s notice, no pro-rata adjustment will be given for part term tuition. Notice in writing will be accepted at any time during Term 4 in relation to the follow year’s enrolment. In this circumstance the requirement for 10 weeks’ notice will be waived.
