Thursday 5 July, 2018 | Term 2, Week 10
IN THIS ISSUE:

Dear Parents and Friends,

Thank you all very much for taking the time to meet with your children’s teacher last week. Many teachers commented to me that they valued this time of sharing what they know and understand about your children and also getting to know you and hearing of your aspirations for your son or daughter. In order for your child to maximise their potential and to flourish, we need to develop a very strong partnership with each other. You demonstrated this commitment last week ~ thank you!

On Sunday I attended the beautiful Mass at St Madeleine’s with our Bishop, the Most Reverend Vincent Long Van Nguyen and Father Vince. After Mass all the congregation walked to the location set for the new church and Bishop Vincent and Father Vince blessed the land with Holy Water and then ‘turned the first sod’ ~ a symbolic gesture to commence the building of the new church....

Sunday 8 July 2018: The Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B

Mk 6:1-6
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark

A prophet is despised only in his own country.

Jesus went to his home town and his disciples accompanied him. With the coming of the sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue and most of them were astonished when they heard him. They said, ‘Where did the man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been granted him, and these miracles that are worked through him? This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joset and Jude and Simon? His sisters, too, are they not here with us?’ And they would not accept him. And Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is only despised in his own country among his own relations and in his own house’; and he could work no miracle there, though he cured a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.

House of Welcome

The St Francis Social Services have been operating since 1978 working to uphold the intrinsic dignity of each person by providing support and advocacy to empower the most disadvantaged and marginalised within our community.

Last week our community supported the House of Welcome with a food drive. The spirit of your generosity was quite overwhelming. May we always remember the moral imperative that drives us to do what we do.

1 Peter 4:8-10

Most of all, love one another deeply. Welcome others into your homes without complaining. God’s gifts of grace come in many forms. Each of you has received a gift in order to serve others. You should use it faithfully.

Praying with Our Children

Prayer is an integral part of our lives. Making time to pray with your family teaches our children the love of God and how together as God’s people, we can support each other in developing an intimate relationship with our Lord.

Pope Francis tells us that,” Each day the Lord calls us to follow him with courage and fidelity; he has made us the great gift of choosing us as his disciples; he invites us to proclaim him with joy as the Risen one, but he asks us to do so by word and by the witness of our lives, in daily life.”

Traditional prayers include:

  • The Lord’s Prayer
  • The Hail Mary
  • The Glory Be
  • The Apostles Creed
  • The Angelus

Discrimination, Harassment & Bullying
At St Madeleine’s Primary School, we aim to provide a safe, secure and welcoming environment in which everyone is treated with dignity and respect. Each member of our community has the right to feel safe, happy and valued. The school has a responsibility to take reasonable steps to prevent and address Discrimination, Harassment & Bullying in line with the CEDP Anti-bullying policy.

What is Bullying?

Bullying is repeated incidents involving:

  •  a bigger, stronger or more powerful child on a smaller or weaker child, or
  • a group of children on a single child

These might be:

  • Verbal: the child is called names, put down, threatened.
  • Physical: the child is hit, tripped, poked, kicked, or belongings are stolen or damaged.
  •  Social: the child is left out, ignored, or rumours are spread.
  •  Psychological: the child is stalked or given dirty looks.

Bullying is different from teasing, rough-and-tumble or schoolyard fights. What makes it different is that the incidents are ongoing, and there is usually an imbalance of size, strength and power between the children involved.
