IN THIS ISSUE:

Dear Parents and Friends,

On Wednesday we gathered in the church for Mass to celebrate The Assumption of Our Lady to Heaven. This Feast Day is a Holy Day of Obligation to honour the blessed mother of Jesus. The children participated so beautifully ~  singing three new hymns and responding in prayer with great enthusiasm. We had a visiting priest, Father George, who would have been impressed with our community and the respectful way we engaged in the Mass together.

Our Trivia Night is happening on Saturday 25th August ~ 6.30pm for a 7pm start ~  in our school hall. Please look for the flyer in this newsletter and book yourself in to sit anywhere or on a class table.  BYO drinks and nibbles. This is an important fundraiser for the P&F who have raised $8000 to date this year. Their target is $15,000 and so we will all need to support this event in order to reach this target. Each year the P&F transfer funds to the school to purchase items such as more take home readers and sets of guided readers. We also need to continually update our technology each year and we rely very much on the P&F donation to purchase these items for the classroom programs. Please phone today to book your table and come along for a night of fun!...

Monday 19 August 2018: Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B

Jn 6:51-58
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John

My flesh is real food and my blood is real drink

Jesus said to the crowd:

‘I am the living bread which has come down from heaven.

Anyone who eats this bread will live forever;

and the bread that I shall give

is my flesh, for the life of the world.’

Then the Jews started arguing with one another:
‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ they said.
Jesus replied:

‘I tell you most solemnly,

if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man

and drink his blood,

you will not have life in you.

Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood

has eternal life,

and I shall raise him up on the last day.

For my flesh is real food

and my blood is real drink.

He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood

lives in me

and I live in him.

As I, who am sent by the living Father,

myself draw life from the Father,

so whoever eats me will draw life from me.

This is the bread come down from heaven;

not like the bread our ancestors ate:

they are dead,

but anyone who eats this bread will live for ever.’

NAPLAN School Readiness Testing

In 2019 NAPLAN will be changing from its current paper based form to an online test. As part of the transition, a School Readiness Test will be undertaken by NSW schools from 27th to 31st August. The school readiness test is a 'practice run' for schools to assess their technology ahead of NAPLAN Online. The readiness test is not an assessment of student ability.

The School Readiness Test is to provide school staff and students the opportunity to:

  • Engage and become familiar with the assessment platform
  • Gain insight into the changed administration procedures
  • Provide valuable feedback on areas in which schools need additional support

Year 5 students will participate in two tests: an Omnibus test, which includes questions from the domains of numeracy, reading and conventions of language and a Writing test. Year 3 will sit the omnibus test only. The purpose of these assessments is to familiarise schools and students with the new online platform, therefore, reports will not be issued for SRT.

Your child will not need any academic preparation for the school readiness test. This is not a test of their literacy and numeracy skills, but an opportunity for them to experience the online test format and for their school to assess its online testing capabiity. If parents would like to familiarise themselves and their children with the look and feel of the NAPLAN online test a public demonstration site with sample questions is available here.

A NAPLAN FAQ's sheet will be sent home to parents next week. If you have any further queries please contact the school office.

Parent Information Session - Mathematics

Next Monday 20th August, St Madeleine's will be running a parent information session on Mathematics, with a focus on multiplication and division. This workshop is to inform parents how students develop mental strategies in multiplication and division, from kindergarten to Year 6. Teachers are currently participating in a professional learning program, called Multiplicative Thinking, which aims to develop their content knowledge in multiplication and division and identify common sticking points for students.

This workshop will commence promptly at 9am in the library and will be followed by open classrooms. Parents will have the opportunity to go into classrooms and observe students engaging in multiplicative tasks aimed at developing mental computation strategies.

This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to work in partnership with the school, witnessing first hand the mathematical learning children are engaging in daily at St Madeleine's.

I hope that you are able to join us and I am looking forward to this opportunity to work alongside you. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or your child's classroom teacher.

Assistant Principal
