Thursday 13 September, 2018 | Term 3, Week 8

Dear Parents and Friends,

It was a particularly lovely day last Monday when we welcomed our Grandparents to St Madeleine's. Thank you to all our families for dressing the children up so well and providing a beautiful morning tea for our guests. The theme for this year's Book Week was Find Your Treasure and it was clear from all the happy faces that our Grandparents are indeed treasured by their families. Mrs Fisher and her team deserve our congratulations and thanks for planning such a fun filled day for our community.

Thank you to our generous families for contributing to the Fiver for a Farmer Day last week. What fun we all had dancing together under the COLA in the afternoon! Thank you to Mrs Irvine and Ms Williams and to the Kindergarten children for planning this event and helping us all reach out to those in our country who are struggling with the current drought. Our community donated $1920 to the CWA Drought Appeal. A magnificent effort everyone and thank you!....

Friday 14 September 2018: The Exhalation of the Cross

Jn 3:13-17
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John

The Son of Man must be lifted up.

Jesus said to Nicodemus;

‘No one has gone up to heaven

except the one who came down from heaven,

the Son of Man who is in heaven;

and the Son of Man must be lifted up

as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert,

so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.

Yes, God loved the world so much

that he gave his only Son,

so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost

but may have eternal life.

For God sent his Son into the world

not to condemn the world,

but so that through him the world might be saved.’

Sunday 16 September: The Twenty Fourth Sunday in
Ordinary Time - Year B

Mk 8:27-35
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark

You are the Christ...the Son of Man was destined to suffer much.

Jesus and his disciples left for the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he put this  question to his disciples, 'Who do people say I am?' And they told him. 'John the Baptist,' they said, 'others Elijah; others again, one of the prophets.' 'But you,' he asked, 'who do you say I am?' Peter spoke up and said to him, 'You are the Christ.' And he gave them strict orders not to tell anyone about him.

And he began to teach them that the son of Man was destined to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and to be put to death, and after three days to rise again; and he said all this quite openly. Then, taking him aside, Peter started to remonstrate with him. But, turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said to him, 'Get behind me, Satan! Because the way you think is not God's way but man's.'

He called the people and his disciples to him and said, 'if anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.'

Praying with Our Children
Prayer is an integral part of our lives. Making time to pray with your family teaches our children the love of God and how together as God's people, we can support each other in developing a relationship with our Lord.

Pope Francis tells us that, "Each day the Lord calls us to follow him with courage and fidelity; he has made us the great gift of choosing us as his disciples; he invites us to proclaim him with joy as the Risen one, but he asks us to do so by word and by the witness of our lives, in daily life."

Traditional prayers include:
  • The Lord's Prayer
  • The Hail Mary
  • The Glory Be
  • The Apostles Creed
  • The Angelus

Priority of Enrolment

Under Catholic Education Office policies schools are required to follow Diocesan enrolment policy giving priority in the order as outlined below:
  • children of Catholic families in the local parish
  • children of Catholic families who live outside the parish geographic boundaries but regularly attend
  • the school's local parish
  • children of Catholic families who are parishioners of another parish
  • children of families who actively participate in the life of the school and local parish community
  • children of Orthodox families
  • children whose families belong to other Christian churches who, with their parents, respect and agree to support the Catholic mission of the school including the faith education it offers for their children
  •  children of non-Christian faiths who, with their parents, respect and agree to support the Catholic mission of the school including the faith education it offers for their children
  • children who, with their parents, respect and agree to support the Catholic mission of the school including the faith education, it offers for their children.
Provided that:
  • siblings of presently enrolled children will have preference over applicants who have no sibling in the school within each category in the priority list.
  • a child who has completed primary education in a Catholic parish-based primary school will usually be offered continuity of enrolment in a Catholic secondary school.
Withdrawal Notice Period for leaving St Madeleine's

A term's notice (10 school weeks) in writing must be given to the principal before the removal of a student or a full term's fees will be payable. The notice can be given any time during term for the next term. One exception is that notice in writing will be accepted at any time during Term 4 in relation to the following year's enrolment, that is the notice period of 10 school weeks will be waived in this circumstance.

The requirement for a terms notice (10 school weeks) is recognition by the family of the commitment to assist with funding of the school by having their child take a place that could have been offered to another family. Unless the student is present for the August census or the student is able to be replaced mid-year, which is unlikely, the loss of the student will most certainly result in the loss of significant government funding. Thus, a term notice provides the school with an opportunity to replace the student within the next term.

Thank you for your cooperation with this matter.

The Rural Fire Service has declared early fire bans and the bushfire season has officially started earlier this year.

As part of our Bushfire Response Plan, it is important that all parents are aware of how both St Madeleine's Primary School and Marian Catholic College will respond if there is any threat of bushfire in proximity to the school campus.

Throughout the bushfire season, both schools maintain a continuous daily summary of the fire risk in the area by monitoring Fires Near Us and consulting with the Rural Fire Service (RFS).

In the event of an identified bushfire risk, the Principals will make the decision on whether school should be cancelled on that day, evacuated, or lock down procedures put in place.

These decisions will be based upon the following risk assessments:

On the day prior to an identified fire risk, at 4pm a decision on conditions will be made by the RFS. If the conditions are deemed:

The Principals will alert the Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta (CEDP), all staff, families and contractors via phone notification (using the School Stream app) or SMS text that the school will be closed the following day and will remain so until the all-clear has been given by the RFS.

Extreme and/or Severe:

The Principals will confer with the RFS and the CEDP and make a decision as to whether the school will close while these conditions prevail. Alerts will be given via email and text.

Very High:

The Principals’ assessment will be on a ‘Watch and Act’ basis and a decision will be made in response to the progress of fires in the area. In the case of fire within 2km of the campus, the schools will go into bushfire lockdown. An alert will be sent via email and text to all families informing them of the situation.

In the case of a lockdown, St Madeleine’s students will be escorted to the hall and Marian students will be accommodated both in the hall and the iLearn Centre.  Both buildings have been constructed to render them ember resistant and they have been identified by the RFS as the safest places of refuge on the site.  In each location, we will have water, snack foods and medical equipment on hand.

All adults and students, including visitors and contractors, will remain on site until authorities indicate that it is safe to leave.  We will endeavor to keep families informed via text and email while we are in lockdown if we are able to do so.

No persons will be permitted to enter the Marian Catholic College or St Madeleine’s Primary School sites once a lockdown has been activated.

St Madeleine's Parents and Friends General Scope of Positions

The P&F President is expected to chair the meetings of all the P&F Executive meetings, together with the General P&F meetings. The Executive and General meetings are normally held on the same evening at least once per term. An Annual General Meeting is held at the beginning of the new year. The President will, from time to time throughout the year, be asked to attend events such as Kindy Information Evening and the Beginning of Year Welcome Function. The President will work with the Principal and Committee to prepare an Annual Fund Raising Plan based on the needs of the school and be available to assist all Committee Members in whatever is required.

Vice President
The Vice President shall at all times assist and support the President in the performance of his/her duties. Where necessary, the Vice President will deputise for the President at meetings and functions. The Vice President will work with the Committee and share the work load of any event as required.

The P&F Secretary will at each Executive and General Meeting of the P&F take concise and accurate minutes. These minutes will be circulated to members of the P&F at the time of the next meeting. Working closely with both the President and the Vice President the Secretary will assist in the smooth running of the P&F Executive.

Assistant Secretary
The Assistant Secretary shall assist and support the Secretary in the performance of his/her duties.

The role of the P&F Treasurer is also quite varied and some of the components include; Reconciling bank accounts, preparing summaries and reconciliations during fund raising events; reporting to the P&F Committee regarding the status of accounts, preparing the books for the year and audit and liasing with the auditor.

Parent Co-Ordinator
The Parent Co-Ordinator encourages the Class Contact Parents (at least 2 per grade) to promote activities within their years to foster class unity. Class Contact Parents provide the Co-ordinator with dates and from this information an event calendar is created which is then made available to all within the St Madeleine's School Community. The Parent Co-ordinator is instrumental in assisting the Fund Raising Co-ordinator to find volunteers and then organise these volunteers in terms of tasks etc.

Kiss & Drop Co-Ordinator
Maintains and Coordinates the Kiss & Drop for the year.

Fundraising Co-ordinator
The School Principal and the P&F Executive and Committee will establish goals for the coming year. The P&F Executive will identify the types of fund raising activities that are deemed suitable for the year. The Fund Raising Co-ordinator will then, with the full assistance and support of the P&F Executive, create teams that will work together to implement each fundraising activity.
We are currently looking for someone to take over the role as Kiss and Drop Coordinator next term. Please contact Maree McNeil on  maree.mcneil@bigpond.com
