Thursday 27 September, 2018 | Term 3, Week 10
IN THIS ISSUE:

Dear Parents and Friends,

It 's difficult to believe that we are at the conclusion of Term 3!! We have so many events and achievements to be proud of this term from zone and diocesan athletics, 100 days of Kindergarten, Year 6 debating, voice of youth public speaking competition, celebration of First Eucharist, Father's Day celebrations, fiver for a farmer......the list goes on!! None of this would be possible without the incredible talent and generosity of the St Madeleine's community. We thank you for your ongoing commitment and support of both your children and the school.

Last week I had the pleasure of watching our Year 6 debating team compete against Christ the King Primary School, North Rocks. This was the final debate in the Inter-School Debating Competition involving four local Catholic primary schools. Both of our teams, affirmative and negative, were successful last week in winning their debates. This meant that St Madeleine's Debating Team were the overall winners of the Inter-School Debating Competition!...

Sunday 30 September: The Twenty Sixth Sunday in
Ordinary Time - Year B

Mk 9:38-43, 45, 47-48
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark

Anyone who is not against us is for us.
If your hand should cause you to sin, cut it off.

John said to Jesus, ‘Master, we saw a man who is not one of us casting out devils in your name; and because he was not one of us we tried to stop him.’ But Jesus said, ‘You must not stop him: no one who works a miracle in my name is likely to speak evil of me. Anyone who is not against us is for us.

‘If anyone gives you a cup of water to drink just because you belong to Christ, then I tell you solemnly, he will most certainly not lose his reward.

‘But anyone who is an obstacle to bring down one of these little ones who have faith, would be better thrown into the sea with a great millstone round his neck. And if your hand should cause you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter into life crippled, than to have two hands and go to hell, into the fire that cannot be put out. And if your foot should cause you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter into life lame, than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. And if your eye should cause you to sin, tear it out; it is better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell where their worm does not die nor their fire go out.’

The Angelus

The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.
And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.
Hail Mary, full of grace, The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women and
Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners now
And at the hour of our death.
Behold the handmaid of the Lord.
Be it done unto me according to thy word.
(Hail Mary...)
And the Word was made Flesh.
And dwelt among us. (Hail Mary...)
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray

Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that, we to whom the Incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an Angel, may by His Passion and Cross, be brought to the glory of His Resurrection. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen

Discrimination, Harassment & Bullying

At St Madeleine’s Primary School, we aim to provide a safe, secure and welcoming environment in which everyone is treated with dignity and respect. Each member of our community has the right to feel safe, happy and valued. The school has a responsibility to take reasonable steps to prevent and address Discrimination, Harassment & Bullying in line with the CEDP Anti-bullying policy.

What is Bullying?

Bullying is repeated incidents involving:

 • a bigger, stronger or more powerful child on a smaller or weaker child, or

• a group of children on a single child

These might be:

• Verbal: the child is called names, put down, threatened.

• Physical: the child is hit, tripped, poked, kicked, or belongings are stolen or damaged.

 • Social: the child is left out, ignored, or rumours are spread.

 • Psychological: the child is stalked or given dirty looks.

Bullying is different from teasing, rough-and-tumble or schoolyard fights. What makes it different is that the incidents are ongoing, and there is usually an imbalance of size, strength and power between the children involved.

If you bully someone else….

 • You will be expected to stop it immediately.

 • The Principal or Assistant Principal will be informed of your behaviour.

 • An appropriate consequence will be given.

 • Your parents will be informed.

 • Your behaviour will be monitored.

• You will be assisted with changing your pattern of behaviour.

If you are being bullied……

What to do

 • Avoid situations that may lead to bullying

 • Look at your own behaviour and see if it is, in any way, causing the bullying

 • Remain calm

•Tell the bully that he / she is annoying you and you want it to stop

• Look for support from others. (e.g. a friend, parent or teacher)

• Report the bullying to your class teacher, the teacher on duty, the Assistant Principal or the Principal

What can parents do?

 • Listen to their children’s concerns. Ask them directly about their anxieties

 • Work with the school to address the problem

 • Develop your child’s skills and confidence so that they can interact with others socially in a positive way

 • Praise your child’s efforts in self-control, non-violent and responsible behaviour

 • Help your child to develop problem solving strategies

Staff will ensure that procedural fairness applies in dealing with any incidents of bullying. Appropriate and timely support, management and resolution of reported incidents of bullying will be offered to all persons involved in these incidents including the bystanders who have significant influence on the outcome of a bullying issue.

If you would like any further advice on this topic or would like to report cyberbullying behaviour you can contact The Hills Liaison Officer Constable Rob Paterson on 9680 5399.

The Rural Fire Service has declared early fire bans and the bushfire season has officially started earlier this year.

As part of our Bushfire Response Plan, it is important that all parents are aware of how both St Madeleine's Primary School and Marian Catholic College will respond if there is any threat of bushfire in proximity to the school campus.

Throughout the bushfire season, both schools maintain a continuous daily summary of the fire risk in the area by monitoring Fires Near Us and consulting with the Rural Fire Service (RFS).

In the event of an identified bushfire risk, the Principals will make the decision on whether school should be cancelled on that day, evacuated, or lock down procedures put in place.

These decisions will be based upon the following risk assessments:

On the day prior to an identified fire risk, at 4pm a decision on conditions will be made by the RFS. If the conditions are deemed:

Catastrophic:

The Principals will alert the Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta (CEDP), all staff, families and contractors via phone notification (using the School Stream app) or SMS text that the school will be closed the following day and will remain so until the all-clear has been given by the RFS.

Extreme and/or Severe:

The Principals will confer with the RFS and the CEDP and make a decision as to whether the school will close while these conditions prevail. Alerts will be given via email and text.

Very High:

The Principals’ assessment will be on a ‘Watch and Act’ basis and a decision will be made in response to the progress of fires in the area. In the case of fire within 2km of the campus, the schools will go into bushfire lockdown. An alert will be sent via email and text to all families informing them of the situation.

In the case of a lockdown, St Madeleine’s students will be escorted to the hall and Marian students will be accommodated both in the hall and the iLearn Centre.  Both buildings have been constructed to render them ember resistant and they have been identified by the RFS as the safest places of refuge on the site.  In each location, we will have water, snack foods and medical equipment on hand.

All adults and students, including visitors and contractors, will remain on site until authorities indicate that it is safe to leave.  We will endeavor to keep families informed via text and email while we are in lockdown if we are able to do so.

No persons will be permitted to enter the Marian Catholic College or St Madeleine’s Primary School sites once a lockdown has been activated.

St Madeleine's Parents and Friends General Scope of Positions

President
The P&F President is expected to chair the meetings of all the P&F Executive meetings, together with the General P&F meetings. The Executive and General meetings are normally held on the same evening at least once per term. An Annual General Meeting is held at the beginning of the new year. The President will, from time to time throughout the year, be asked to attend events such as Kindy Information Evening and the Beginning of Year Welcome Function. The President will work with the Principal and Committee to prepare an Annual Fund Raising Plan based on the needs of the school and be available to assist all Committee Members in whatever is required.

Vice President
The Vice President shall at all times assist and support the President in the performance of his/her duties. Where necessary, the Vice President will deputise for the President at meetings and functions. The Vice President will work with the Committee and share the work load of any event as required.

Secretary
The P&F Secretary will at each Executive and General Meeting of the P&F take concise and accurate minutes. These minutes will be circulated to members of the P&F at the time of the next meeting. Working closely with both the President and the Vice President the Secretary will assist in the smooth running of the P&F Executive.

Assistant Secretary
The Assistant Secretary shall assist and support the Secretary in the performance of his/her duties.

Treasurer
The role of the P&F Treasurer is also quite varied and some of the components include; Reconciling bank accounts, preparing summaries and reconciliations during fund raising events; reporting to the P&F Committee regarding the status of accounts, preparing the books for the year and audit and liasing with the auditor.

Parent Co-Ordinator
The Parent Co-Ordinator encourages the Class Contact Parents (at least 2 per grade) to promote activities within their years to foster class unity. Class Contact Parents provide the Co-ordinator with dates and from this information an event calendar is created which is then made available to all within the St Madeleine's School Community. The Parent Co-ordinator is instrumental in assisting the Fund Raising Co-ordinator to find volunteers and then organise these volunteers in terms of tasks etc.

Kiss & Drop Co-Ordinator
Maintains and Coordinates the Kiss & Drop for the year.

Fundraising Co-ordinator
The School Principal and the P&F Executive and Committee will establish goals for the coming year. The P&F Executive will identify the types of fund raising activities that are deemed suitable for the year. The Fund Raising Co-ordinator will then, with the full assistance and support of the P&F Executive, create teams that will work together to implement each fundraising activity.
