Thursday 8 November, 2018 | Term 4, Week 4

Dear Parents and Friends,

This week we hosted a visit from our Local Area Command Youth Liaison Officer, Senior Constable Rob Paterson. Constable Rob was invited to speak to all students in Years 3 - 6 about their responsibility to be respectful online citizens. Constable Rob explained that from the age of 10 children can be charged by the police and receive a police report for any offensive or defamatory statements made online. I have included a document in this newsletter for you to read as to how you can keep your children safe whilst they are using social media or any device. It is good to be reminded of our responsibilities to be respectful of each other in all settings ~ personally and publically.

I am very pleased that several parents have expressed interest in being part of the Parents and Friends’ Executive in 2019. At the last meeting we spoke about the importance of the work these parents do in bringing the community together. We also spoke about how important fundraising is so that our children have the facilities and resources they need to maximise their learning opportunities. I look forward to welcoming you all to the nomination meeting on Monday 3rd December at 7pm in the staffroom when we vote in the 2019 P&F Executive.

Many parents express their concern to me about traffic flow around the grounds. Please drive very carefully whilst dropping off and picking up and only park in the designated spaces. It would be helpful if you staggered your arrival in the afternoon and didn’t all expect to pick up at 3pm. Parents who arrive at 3.15pm have a straightforward run in, pick up and then out. I also suggest that from 3pm until 3.15pm parents leaving the grounds do not attempt to turn right out of the main driveway. It blocks the traffic and is very dangerous. Your consideration is very much appreciated.

We look forward to welcoming our new 2019 Kinder families to the St Madeleine’s community this evening in the Library. They will hear from the 2019 Kinder teachers ~ Ms Natalie Williams and Ms Natalie Irvine, from Mrs Jefferson, Mrs Fisher, from representatives from the P&F ~ Mrs Tori Papallo and Mrs Grainne Bolland and also from me. The most important part of the evening will be the opportunity for the new parents to meet in small groups, hearing from our current parents about life and learning at St Madeleine’s. We hope this meeting enables our new families to begin to get to know other parents who will be part of their lives over the next seven years.

Next week is Week 5 and so at St Madeleine’s we celebrate No Homework Week! This is your family’s opportunity to create some space or do an activity together. Enjoy!

With my best wishes,

Mrs Jeanette Black

Every Learner Every Day
Attendance rate to date is 85.4%

Our community believes that every day counts for every child. Our attendance levels are recorded below. Our target is for at least 90% attendance and you will note that two out of seven reached over this target over the past fortnight. It is important to know that your children must be at school and inside the classroom before 9am in order for you and them not to have to go to the office for a late note.

Mk 12:38-44
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark

This poor widow has put more in than all who contributed.

In his teaching Jesus said, ‘Beware of the scribes who like to walk about in long robes, to be greeted obsequiously in the market squares, to take the front seats in the synagogues and the places of honour at banquets; these are the men who swallow the property of widows, while making a show of lengthy prayers. The more severe will be the sentence they receive.’

He sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the treasury, and many of the rich put in a great deal. A poor widow came and put in two small coins, the equivalent of a penny. Then he called to his disciples and said to them, ‘I tell you solemnly, this poor widow has put more in than all who have contributed to the treasury; for they have all put in money they had over, but she from the little she had has put in everything she possessed, all she had to live on.’

Remembrance Day

Almighty God,
Upon the cross, sorrow and pain and every dreadful, tragic consequence of sin was overcome.
Today we remember all those who have joined in that sacrifice for peace and justice.
We give thanks for the bravery of men and women who have served for harmony and love.
And in a world that is still torn and broken we declare that Jesus is Lord.
That hope overcomes despair,
That joy overcomes sorrow,
That peace overcomes hostility,
That love overcomes hate.
From the tomb, the promise of eternity emerged in a resurrected Christ.
Grace was poured into the hearts of all those who suffer, mourn and grieve.
Lord, we lift our hearts to you and continue to remember, to hope and to love.

A Plenary Council is the highest formal gathering of all local churches in a country. Our Plenary Council 2020 is being held so that we can dialogue about the future of the Catholic Church in Australia. It is being held to give the Catholic community in Australia time to listen, dialogue and discern with one another and, guided by the Holy Spirit, about the future, the role and relevance of the Catholic Church in Australia.

Recently, St Madeleine’s Parish held a meeting to give people an opportunity to voice their opinions. If you missed the parish meeting, please come along to the school hall on Saturday 1st December while the Gingerbread House Making afternoon is scheduled to have your say recorded regarding the future direction of the Catholic Church.

Praying with Our Children

Please Pray with us daily

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen

Diocesan Education Mass & Expo

On Thursday 25th October, our school leaders attended the Diocesan Education Mass and Expo. The theme of the day was "Education can heal a Nation" and there were a number of schools that exhibited how they promoted social justice in their communities. Our school leaders presented themselves in such a professional manner by discussing the different ways St Madeleine's has participated in charity events to help people in need. Representatives from Catholic Mission also spoke about the new and exciting ways we can help fundraise and raise awareness for people less fortunate. The Bishop emphasised how everyone can make a difference, no matter how young they might be. This was the message that our leaders took home with them as they continue Jesus' mission.

Next week is a NO HOMEWORK WEEK at St Madeleine’s. This is the week we encourage you to spend some time with your family reading, talking and listening to one another. It is an opportunity for parents to genuinely connect with their child/children, whether it be over dinner or playing a board game, without the stress of finishing homework.

School Hours & Supervision
Lessons commence each morning at 8.50am and conclude at 3.00pmon Mondays to Fridays. The school grounds are open to pupils from 8.20am each morning and remain open to pupils until the last bus leaves each afternoon. At all times outside the period from 8.20am to approximately 4.00pm, the school grounds are out of bounds to all pupils.

Normal supervision of pupils by the school will be undertaken between the hours 8.20am - 3.30pm Mondays to Fridays, however, we are aware that some students arrive earlier than this because of bus timetables. Therefore, an executive member of staff is on the playground from 8am to supervise these early arrivals.Would you please assist the school in the interest of the pupils’ safety by endeavouring to ensure that your child does not attend or remain in the precincts of the school outside the hours of 8.20am to 3.30pm on Mondays to Fridays, unless and only if they are arriving by bus or waiting for buses in the supervised bus lines. If any parent or guardian has difficulty in ensuring that their child does not attend school until 8.20am and / or ensuring that their child leaves school by 3.30pm (bus passengers only excepted), kindly contact the school in order to discuss what special arrangements might be made for their child.

The school will not be responsible for supervising or caring for students outside the school premises unless the students are engaged in a school sponsored activity e.g. an excursion or a sporting event.  The school will not be responsible for supervising or caring for students on their journey to and from school. In particular, the school will not be responsible for supervising students at bus stops either on their way to school or on their way home from school.  Each student’s journey to and from school shall be the responsibility of each student’s parent or guardian.

Special arrangements will be made in relation to authorised school activities, which require the attendance of students at the school outside of these hours. It is important that children arrive at school on time for the assembly bell at 8.50am.

Child Protection - Volunteer Helpers
It is a Diocesan requirement that parents who volunteer at the school e.g. Reading Groups, Kiss & Drop, Canteen, Uniform Shop or Excursions - Must complete the CEO online Child Protection Module Building Child Safe Communities
http://childprotection.parra.catholic.edu.au/training which needs to be completed every two years and is emailed to the school after completion.

You do not need to do the Working with Children Check at Service NSW.

Mobile Phones
Children are not permitted to bring a mobile phone to school unless parents have a particular reason why they need their child to carry one. If this is the case, please ask for a permission note from the office detailing rights and responsibilities of mobile use at school.

School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) 2019 Applications Now Open

School student applications for 2019 open from Monday, 15 October 2018.

Students progressing to year 3 and year 7 do not need to re-apply if they:

  • are continuing at the same school
  • are residing at the same address
  • have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.

Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails

Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2018 to ensure student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after  31 December 2018, the system will automatically cancel a card and a new one will need to be issued.

Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out during December 2018 and January 2019.

Students residing in Rural and Regional (R&R) areas should receive their travel pass at the commencement of the new school year from their nominated operator. Note: some R&R operators do not issue travel passes. Students should check with their operator for more information.

Please see the attached information regarding printed school travel brochures.
